Poppy + Rose (LV's LA)

In Los Angeles we have elevated brunch to an art form. There is no shortage of great places to enjoy brunch in the City of Angels. Poppy+Rose is hidden in the flower district in downtown Los Angeles and can best be described as Southern comfort food with a California vibe. This is a cute cozy spot to fuel up before you go shopping downtown and has lots of great breakfast and lunch options.

Between the light fluffy pancakes, flaky buttery biscuits and breakfast scrambles, it is hard to make a choice, but you can put your money on the chicken and waffles. In their interpretation of this southern dish, crispy buttermilk fried chicken is served on top of a brown butter Belgian waffle with a dollop of whipped honey butter and maple syrup served on the side.

The atmosphere is bright cheery and pleasant

Perfect spot to load up on a delicious flaky biscuit

Sometimes its ok to enjoy a few biscuits:-)

If you are dining alone, simply order and sit at the counter

There are plenty of healthy options such as the lox bagel sandwich with arugula onion and tomato

There are also plenty of fresh juices to enjoy

The market salad with mixed greens, seasonal fruit, pecans, Parmesan and Persian cucumbers is delicious and healthy if you want something lighter than some of the more indulgent offerings they offer

The fresh flowers on each table is a great touch

If you are not counting calories, definitely try the chicken and waffles at Poppy+Rose

Full and happy:-)

Delicious leftovers to enjoy later
The restaurant is open 6:00 am to 3:00 pm Monday through Saturday and 8:00 am to 3:00 pm on Sunday. Allow plenty of time because reservations are not taken and service can be slow at times

Recipe: Shakshuka with Mushrooms, Parmesan and Basil

Both my children LOVE eggs, so you would often see us eating eggs in various cooking styles, such as half boiled egg, fried egg, scrambled eggs and hard boiled eggs. Earlier this week, I made shakshuka for them for brunch.

Shakshuka (or shakshouka) is a dish of eggs poached in tomato, with bread on the side to mop up the sauce. Here is my version with sauteed mushrooms and topped with Parmesan cheese and sweet basil leaves which I served with a crusty loaf. The eggs were still slightly runny in the centre. The dish is ready once the egg white has set. Simple and delicious! Suitable for vegetarians too.

Shakshuka with Mushrooms, Parmesan and Basil
Recipe by Baby Sumo
Preparation time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 8-10 minutes
Serves 4

Ingredients
1 tbsp olive oil
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
100g grey oyster mushrooms, sliced
1/2 can tomato puree (approx 200g)
1/2 cup water
1/2 tsp vegetable stock granules
4 eggs
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Parmesan cheese
Sweet basil leaves

1. In a large frying pan, heat oil over medium high heat. Add garlic and saute for about 1 minute, until lightly golden.

2. Add the mushrooms and saute for another 1 minute. Then, stir in the tomato puree, water and chicken stock granules and bring to the boil.

3. Once boiling, reduce to low heat. Break in the eggs into the pan, (be careful not to break them), season the eggs with salt and pepper, then cover the pan with a lid and allow to cook for about 4-5 minutes, or until the egg whites have set.

4. Remove from heat, and grate Parmesan cheese all over. Garnish with sweet basil leaves and serve with some crusty bread.

Epic Brunch @ Pullman Putrajaya Lakeside

Every Sunday, Pullman Putrajaya Lakeside will be holding the Epic Brunch at The Village Restaurant & Bar, overlooking Lake Putrajaya. The Epic Brunch buffet is priced at RM317 nett with free flow champagne, RM 243nett per adult (without alcohol) and RM130 nett per child, and will feature a live band, DJ, unlimited daiquiris, tap beer, stunning seafood, sizzling steaks, live cooking stations, salads and a dessert room. Furthermore, there will be entertainment for the kids in the form of face painting and a kids clown.

Last weekend, our family was invited to check out the Epic Brunch, and we sure had a whole lot of fun! It was a hot Sunday morning, but thankfully, we were in a shaded area with sufficient overhead fans and misting fans around us to keep us cool. We were offered a glass of Nicolas Feuillatte champagne as soon as we were seated - talk about good service! :) Our children were both offered fruit juices as well as non-alcoholic daiquiris - they offered a nice, refreshing lime one which was perfect for the hot weather.

The buffet spread includes seafood on ice such as crayfish, prawns, mussels and oysters as well as salmon and tuna sashimi and smoked salmon. Next, you can check out the pasta live cooking station, as well as dim sum.

Chicken wings and drumsticks, as well as sausages, hot off the grill

Not to be missed here is the prime rib - on our visit, the meat was beautifully cooked - it was tender, slightly fatty and utterly delicious.

Leg of lamb

Salt baked Norwegian salmon

Scallops

This lil girl loves taking photos of food too! Check out her Instagram account @babysumokids ;)

Other than the buffet spread, we were also served two courses- first to arrive were these huge spanner crabs! Well worth getting your hands dirty for.

And these massive tiger prawns! Baby D's hands for scale... ;) For us, these were the highlight of the Epic Brunch - the prawns were juicy and so fresh!

Another glass of champagne, thank you very much sir!

After we have contented ourselves with the main spread, we moved on to the air-conditioned dessert room to check out the desserts. There are lots of beautiful cakes, pastries, chocolates, chocolate fountain, more than 10 ice cream flavours, fresh fruits, cheese platter and a popcorn maker. It's hard to resist all the temptations in here. ;)

Our kids had lots of fun, being entertained by the live band as well as the amusing clown, who happily made lots of balloon art for our kids.
