We first tried Minus 4 Degrees' ice cream at PJ's Tipsy Boar restaurant in June 2018, falling in lust instantly with one of its liquor-laced flavours that lacked neither rum nor raisins. Nearly two-and-a-half years later, the brand has its own ice cream parlour, coincidentally beside Tipsy Boar.
Minus 4 Degrees remains a mother-and-daughter effort, offering the kind of ice cream you'd eagerly serve your own family, irreproachable in terms of quality. Natural ingredients, no artificial additives, colouring or preservatives.
We had six flavours this time - the standouts are still the alcoholic varieties. The richly rounded Baileys Coffee (RM13 for a 100-gram cup) takes top honours, the most sensuous ice cream you might taste this month. The Whisky is a should-try too, with that unmistakable finish that lingers smoothly and fades seductively. And finally, the Rum & Raisin is a siren call for us yet again, studded with raisins saturated with rum (RM13).
Of the child-friendly flavours, Macadamia is our favourite, with fresh, crunchy nuts to relish in each spoonful (RM10). The Banana & Cocoa Nibs is full-bodied in tropical fruit ripeness, with the nibs offering textural crisp and contrast (RM9). But the French Vanilla is the one we'd skip, a bit more icy than creamy (RM9).
