Phil's Pizza, Bangsar

Bangsar's latest spot for New York-style pizzas is a casual affair, serving 18-inch pies by the slice at prices starting from RM6.

Our favourite of four pizzas we tried was the classic Pepperoni (RM12), with crisp, thin slices of beef salami all across the slice. The crust meets the mark for pizza that can be enjoyed on the move, pliable enough to be folded, strong enough to hold a thick layer of toppings, crunchier toward the edge. If you're a light eater, one slice should suffice for a simple lunch.

The biggest bang for your buck is the Hot Wings (RM7), blanketed with sweeter-than-spicy chunks of chicken. Vegetarians can try the Truffle Mushroom, moderately earthy with button mushrooms, truffle paste and truffle oil (RM13); we were curious about the Vegan, a cheese-free variant with spinach, cherry tomatoes and pesto sauce, but that wasn't ready when we visited (Phil's officially opens at 11 a.m., but most of the pizzas might only come out after 11:30 a.m.)

The pizza we'd skip is the Margherita (RM9), which doesn't quite work in this style of preparation, cloyingly gooey with generic mozzarella. But we'd definitely order the lively, lightly tangy house-made passion fruit soda (RM7), the perfect refreshment to pair with Phil's pizzas.
