One of our favourite finds during our last Melaka trip was Poh Piah Lwee. Located on Jalan Kubu (near Jonker Walk), this hidden gem is run by a friendly couple, offering local Nyonya delights.
The menu consists of only five items - Poh piah, Nyonya dumpling, Rojak, Nyonya laksa and Minced meat and mushroom noodle. We ordered everything apart from the rojak.
We initially ordered one poh piah (RM3), though the owner aunty insisted we should have two as one would definitely not be enough for us. True enough, she was right - after tasting the first one, we immediately placed an order for another one as it was so GOOD! The popiahs here are made fresh to order. You can watch them make the poh piah at the front of the shop - she skillfully layers fresh beansprouts, fresh lettuce, jicama, sweet sauce, egg and pork lard onto homemade popiah skin. Another highlight for us is the Nyonya dumpling (RM5.50), also known as Nyonya chang. The glutinous sticky rice is tinted in parts with blue pea flower, with a sweet, salty minced pork filling. The taste is well-balanced and the texture was just right. You can also buy them to take away.
They also do a pretty nice version of Nyonya laksa (RM5). Nice and creamy broth, though a tad more spicy than usual. It comes with meehoon and mee, with fish cake, tofu puff, prawns, cockles and cucumber. For the kids, we ordered a bowl of Minced meat and mushroom noodle (RM4).
