Civera Centro

Seafood kingdom in Valencia

2.9kg blue lobster

Civera is an old school Spanish restaurant in the heart of Valencia, located in the trendy end of the modern part of the city, not far from the main train station, Nord. Civera has been going strong for over 50 years now and is highly regarded as one of the finest restaurants in Valencia, loved by both the locals and travelers. What sets this place apart is its fresh seafood stocks. You can see live lobsters and crabs, as well as plenty of fresh fishes and shellfishes on display. Most of the seafood is offered in its most simple format, grill with a touch of seasoning and olive oil. This is a proper seafood restaurant, even the salads offering contain raw fishes or cooked shellfishes.

I am a real seafood addict, so I ordered a selection of shellfishes to share with my table of 4. First was some local Valencian oysters, much bigger than your standard English Rock oysters, less salty and more creamy at the same time, very fresh. Grilled razor clams were fantastic, cooked just about right with a lovely smoky tone. However, the carabineros were even better. The richness was really intense, the addition of rock salt totally enhanced the powerful sweetness of the prawn, it was sensational. Last but not least, it was a giant blue lobster from Westcoast of Spain, weighing 2.9kg, it was a real beast. It was cooked to perfection, the charred aroma, blended in wonderfully with the freshness of the lobster, it was really moist and packed with flavours of the sea, especially when mixing the white meat and brown meat together.

The seafood execution was faultless, it was easy to understand why it is such a successful restaurant. Civera uses top quality fresh seafood, done in such a simple but impactful manner, what is not to love? It was really busy on the night I visited so the service was a little slow, but all the waiters were well mannered and showcased some excellent hospitality skill, while some of the waiters don't speak English at all, we could still feel the warmness from them, which we really appreciated. To sum it up, Civera is a fantastic seafood restaurant full of history and charm, well worth a visit if you are a seafood freak like me when you ever visit Valencia.
