Roman fine dining in an elegant setting
Red tuna, estragon, sour cream and fermented roots |
Out of all the 1 Michelin star restaurants in Rome, Enoteca La Torre is perhaps the one with the most elegant, beautiful and romantic dining room. Located in the Northern part of the capital, Enoteca La Torre is what glamour fine dining is all about, headed up by chef Domenico Stile, the food offering is contemporary, sophisticated with stunning presentation. To finish off my Rome trip with a bang, I opted for the tasting menu "A journey with eyes closed", which is a 7-course menu selected by the chef, mostly taken from its a la carte menu. I always feel tasting menu usually is better value for money than a la carte anyway, as you get to try more dishes at a cost of 10- 20 more euro.
Canapes |
Red mullet fish, bouillabaisse, provolone, wakame and smoked vinegar |
Spaghetto, lupini clams, fennel, bergamot and sea truffle emulsion |
Smoked oxtail ravioli, peppers, capers, caciocavallo and coffee liquor |
The meal kicked off with a selection of snacks, before the first course. The red tuna got off to a winner already, the tuna was so fresh, and the fermented roots delivered such a wonderfully sweet and earthy taste, which acted as a beautiful contrast to the tuna. The red mullet was another strong dish, the fish was cooked to perfection, the provolone really enhanced the fresh taste to another level, and the wakame acted as a great seasoning and offered great chewy texture. The spaghetti with lupini clams was what a good seafood pasta dish is all about. The pasta was so smooth and the sea truffle emulsion just delivered the taste of the sea to the dish, I cannot fault it.
Egg, buffalo milk taleggio, black truffle in a spring garden |
Lamb Villeroy |
Fruit and vegetable salad, meringue, rocket and ginger |
Double chocolate bavarese, fermented strawberries and basil |
The tasting menu was indeed excellent, not only it delivered wonderful taste, the creativity and presentation was also really first class. Foodwise, it was easily Michelin star standard. However, there was one great issue, and it was the service. Our waiter kept forgetting our drink orders, giving us dirty cutleries by mistake and I was overcharged on the bill in the end. The level was poor for a fine dining restaurant, let alone one with such a high reputation, such mistake was unforgiven. This is a real shame, as the cooking quality was fantastic, but totally let down by the front of house team in the evening.
