Riz Noms, Kota Kemuning

Hearty, soulful fare, borrowed from the Spanish, Italian and French cookbooks: Riz Noms serves a solid paella, thick with texture, packed with prawns, mussels, chicken, mushrooms and peas (RM58), complemented by other carb-loaded specialities like the house-made fettuccine that conveys the right al dente bite, tossed with lamb shoulder, celery, carrots, onions and lamb jus (RM36) and linguine with shredded duck confit and truffle oil (RM28; add RM6 for foie gras butter if you feel decadent).

What makes Riz Noms noteworthy is the kitchen's initiative, producing not only its own pasta but baking its own focaccia and churning its own pistachio ice cream, completed with quality honeycomb that bears a beautifully nectarous depth (RM22); have a cool-and-warm conclusion to your meal by washing down the ice cream with hot chocolate. A small selection of wine is offered by both glass and bottle, but the Australian Shiraz tasted bitterly astringent. Service is diligent and deserving of praise.
