Soy to the world: This new tofu-themed cafe is passionate about bean curd, promising everything from fried soy cubes to shaved soy ice desserts, tau foo fah to soy milk beverages, made with non-GMO beans, offered up in creative combinations.
Begin with the basics: Order the signature tau foo fah, warm, soft and silken, meticulously made in-house (it takes four hours to prepare two dozen gallons of the pudding), served with soy milk and a choice of two toppings (possibilities include glutinous rice balls, grass jelly cubes, boba balls and adzuki beans) for RM9.50. Pair with a soy drink - no fewer than 10 varieties are available, including 'Bean Looking For Him,' comprising black soybean milk with Soylab's own brown sugar syrup and freshly cooked tapioca pearls, yielding a preservative-free purity of flavour for all things liquid and solid (RM10 for a regular-size cup).
Soylab's most striking speciality is its interpretation of kakigori, with the smoothly shaved soy ice surfacing in a vaporous swirl at the table (RM13.50). Souffle pancakes are another Japanese-inspired highlight here, with soy milk as as substitute for skimmed milk, lusciously eggy-fluffy, a Christmas promotional treat with cream, green tea gelato and red bean paste (RM23).
