Casse Croûte

 Old school French bistro

Girolle on toast

I would say Cassa Croute is one of the 'better' classic French restaurants in London. The low key tiny French bistro has been around since 2013 and has since become one of the best kept dining hot spot secret for the locals. It is a very 'French' venue with the wine list and food menu written in French only on a blackboard, with an ever-changing daily menu, depending on what is available for the kitchen. The food is in the mood of old school French with items like foie gras terrine. The dining room itself can sit around 20 people, so getting a table is not an easy task, do book ahead and ensure to go on a very empty stomach...

The reason I said that is because the portion here is very big. My starter of girolle mushroom contained a pile of pan-fried girolle with cream, tossed on a piece of grilled toast. The mushroom still had a nice crunch and a mild sweetness with a great depth of earthy aroma. it was very enjoyable. For main, I had a giant plate of chicken cooked in white wine, served with spaetzle. It was the first time ever for me to see such a big plate of French dish in front of me, it came with a portion of a chicken leg and breast, along with a crazy load of spaetzle, which was cooked to that lovely chewy texture. The addition of mushrooms added a nice soft texture, the white wine delivered a sharpness and sweetness which worked well with the chicken, it was a comforting dish.

Overall, my dinner at Casse Croute was a pleasing affair, it was rustic French cooking done in a really comforting level. Nothing fancy, nothing creative, just some solid classic French cooking, which is perfect for a neighborhood restaurant setting. The service was decent, nothing formal or stuffy like you would find in many bistros in France, just the casual and friendly manner as it should be. In short, a great little classic French restaurant in London Bridge, just watch out if you are on a diet as they serve a really big portion!
