Dim sum lunch in style

If I ever fancy a long lazy brunch at the weekend, dim sum is always the first thing that comes to my mind. It is hard to beat tasting pieces after pieces of well crafted dim sum with a nice cup of tea while chatting with friends or family. I have eaten at China Tang many times in the evening but never got the chance to try out its dim sum menu, so when Chinese New Year is just around the corner, it was the perfect excuse to pay a visit. Judging from the dim sum menu, it is mostly classic Cantonese dim sum items. I also used the occasion to try out some of the upcoming Chinese New Year dishes that head chef Fong has created.

The crab and saffron dumpling was steamed to perfection, sweet and juicy, I could really taste the freshness of the crab, the pastry was also well crafted to my delight. The truffle and shiitake bao was such an interesting dish, it came in the shape of a mushroom, which was stuffed with chopped mushrooms and truffle that packed with savoury and earthy aroma. The Iberico pork xiao long bao was easily an upgrade vs Din Tai Fung, the pastry skin was so much thinner, and the pork filling was moist and rich in umami flavour. The chicken clay pot came with a mushroom and black truffle sauce, the chicken was well seasoned and very tender. The sauce was a little weak, however, and I felt a few more drops of oyster sauce or soy sauce would have uplifted the dish to another level.

There are now plenty of Chinese restaurants around London that does excellent dim sum, the only issue is, the majority of the venues does no take booking for the lunch hours. It is normal to wait for at least an hour before acquiring a table on a Sunday in many of the restaurants in China Town. Therefore, China Tang is a great alternative, you pay for the extra for sure, but in return, you are getting dishes that cooked using high-quality ingredients, with beautiful decor and comfortable seating to match, not to mention it is inside the luxurious Dorchester hotel.
