Old Hse Nyonya Cuisine, Taman Bukit Indah

With a Penang-origin chef in the kitchen, Old Hse is a new spot for savouring some of the northern island's soulful favourites, such as loh mee that's unabashedly vice-laden, saturated in a rich, slurp-worthy gravy, slicked up with luscious slices of pork belly (RM13.90; other noodle choices include asam laksa, Nyonya laksa and Siam laksa).

If you prefer rice, there's a choice of nasi kunyit, nasi lemak or nasi bunga telang - the first yields a tender bite, best accompanied by crunchy-juicy Peranakan-style inche kabin fried chicken, plus crisp and fresh acar that's tasty but not overly tangy, as well as sambal udang kering for the final flourish (RM16.90).

Other main-course highlights include pork, chicken and lamb chops, with some marinated with a tamarind dressing.
