When a freshly married couple choose their wedding date as the name for their newborn cafe, it's clear that this is a labour of love. Ray and Amy's first F&B venture marks a daring departure from their past work on movies and TV commercials, but their behind-the-scenes experience in art direction proves invaluable in crafting this tastefully evocative venue, which reverberates with echoes of a bygone era. To enter December Eighteen, customers must first stroll through a stationery-and-antiques shop - what's hidden behind is a surprising space that's set to be a social media smash.

Pop 50 sen into December Eighteen's jukebox and pick a time-worn Shanghai jazz ballad for the soundtrack of your visit. The cooking here channels equally classic notes: Runny-yolked eggs on toast for breakfast (RM3.50; other options span butter kaya toast, Planta sugar toast, nasi lemak and fried bee hoon), followed by more elaborate lunches of rice bowls topped with orange-marinated chicken, scrambled eggs and vegetables (RM15) and noodle soup with kitchen-made chicken-and-chive dumplings (RM13). Portions prove hearty enough to banish hunger, while a signature juice of grapefruit with lychee (RM15) and hot lattes (matcha or coffee) take care of thirst.
