Il Convivio Troiani

Playful fine dining in Rome

Octopus with apples and raspberries

There are plenty of fine dining restaurants around Rome, so it was difficult for me to pick one for dinner out of the pool. After some researches online, Il Convivio Troiani was the one that really caught my attention. The restaurant is located inside the city center, on the edge of River Tiber. Il Convivio Troiani by 3 brothers was launched back in 1988 so you might think such an old restaurant means the food is traditional and old fashioned, however, the contrast could not be greater. The restaurant is known for its playful, edgy fine dining and has earned a Michelin star. For my visit, I opted for the tasting menu to fully experience what the restaurant is capable of.

For the first course, it was a colourful cooking dish with a pan-seared octopus with raspberries, the octopus had such a tender texture and the fruitiness of the apples delivered freshness to the dish and offset the boldness of the octopus. Up next was a scallop cooked inside a bone marrow, served almost like a classic bone marrow dish, the gremolata offered so many aromatic flavours to the scallop, and the scallop itself was so sweet and soft. The main event of the baby goat was stunning, the meat was well seasoned with a killer smoky aroma that I couldn't get enough of. The goat milk and oyster sauce delivered a soft earthy and gamy taste which worked in harmony with the goat, it was truly exceptional.

I got nothing but love for Il Convivio Troiani, the cooking was fun, engaging and full of imagination. At the same time, the taste was exceptional. Sometimes a concept can overshadow the taste but that is not the case at this restaurant. The service was also very strong, so charming and caring, just how I would expect from a top fine dining restaurant. I would rate Il Convivio Troiani as the best dining experience from my trip to Rome, and would happily return if I ever return to the eternal city.
