There are so many great Chinese restaurants in Hong Kong but is hard to find a very classical one that still champions traditional recipes while remaining decent value for money. Simply put, many restaurants care about the bottom line these days, so will always try to avoid dishes that are labor intensive with little return on investment. Lucky enough, I came across Wall City Flavor in Kowloon after noticed it has plenty of old school dishes on offer and been given many great reviews by the local bloggers and presses. Reading from the restaurant's testimonial, the restaurant combine flavours from primary South East China to create something authentic and timeless, with a modern touch make it more contemporary.

The house special steamed crab with gluten rice was loaded with plenty of strong crab aroma, as the crab contained so much brown meat and roe content, which in turn got absorbed into the rice beautifully. The double cooked beef brisket is a very classic Cantonese dish that the beef gets the slow cook treatment first before finishing on the wok with plenty of oil. The Wall City Flavor's version was finely executed, the meat was packed with rich taste thanks to the slow cook method, with a killer crispy surface. The taro and cured meat in clay pot was such a winter comfort, the mellow and creamy taste of the taro worked so well with the robust profile of the cured duck and pork, everything worked in harmony.

Wall City Flavor is a rare gem, it offered some top classic Chinese dishes at a very affordable price. Forget about the fancy presentation or clever use of ingredient combinations, what Wall City Flavor does well is the true authentic quality of classic Chinese tastes. You will be able to find many dishes that you can't find elsewhere in typical Chinese restaurants in Hong Kong, so this is a great place to try if you seek some real old school Chinese dishes. The other great thing about the venue is the service was pretty decent, which is a rarity in Hong Kong!
