Jalan Alor is one of those places which was on our "To-Eat / To Visit" list for the longest time. Everyone talks about it, especially about the legendary chicken wings from Wong Ah Wah.

Recently, we were doing a staycation in one of the hotels in Bukit Bintang, so perfect timing to visit Jalan Alor. It was a short 10-minute walk from our hotel.



Look for the busiest restaurant and you will find Wong Ah Wah (WAW). Over the years, they have grown to several shoplots, with both indoor (air-conditioned) and outdoor seating. There are no rules here, just grab a table and wait for someone to come take your order. We went for the outdoor seating, for the full street food experience.

WAW is what you would call a dai chow 大炒 (aka big fry) Chinese restaurant, whereby you will find a wide range of stir fry dishes, seafood such as grilled fish, crabs, squid, prawns and lala, noodle dishes, yong tau foo and more. They do have a picture menu with prices (in English and Chinese), so ordering is straightforward. We got served pretty quickly, and our food took less than 30 minutes to arrive even though it was pretty crowded.

First to arrive was the Lala soup (RM18).. the portion was pretty reasonable and we enjoyed the fresh clams as well as the lightly spiced soup with hints of ginger and chilli.





Rows and rows of the signature chicken wings are grilled in this contraption, using charcoal fire. Because everyone raves about this, we had very high expectations of the wings. For me, the marination is a little weak, but overall still enjoyable as it has a nice char and smokiness to it which can only be achieved by cooking over charcoal. RM2 each, I think.

We also ordered the Cantonese style koay teow (wat tan hor) for 2 pax - portion was huge, with sliced fish cake, cuttlefish, choy sum, pork and prawns. Pretty tasty.


We also tried the Salted egg fried sotong (RM20 for small) since this is one of our favorite dishes at the Chinese restaurant. The batter here is slightly wet, tastewise it's decent but some of the squid pieces were really small. We prefer the salted egg squid from here.




Overall an interesting experience for us - food is decent and you get to experience the bustling street of Jalan Alor. Location is very handy for tourists as it's right in the Bukit Bintang area. At least we can say that we've finally been to Jalan Alor.



Tip: Try to visit before 7pm before the crowds, to secure a table easily.


Opening times: Sun - Thu 5.30pm - 4.00am; Fri - Sat 5.30pm - 4.30am.

Service: Good.

Price: Total bill RM88.80 for 4 pax.

Nearest MRT: Bukit Bintang (Exit at Entrance A)
