Austrian beef party
Boiled beef party |
Tafelspitz is an iconic Austrian dish, a cut of beef cooked in a soup with vegetables. It became an instant classic after the then Emperor Franz Joseph declared that it was his favourite dish. Plachutta is all about the boiled beef, in fact, it offers 10 types of beef cut, ranging from shoulder to rump. The restaurant is somewhat a landmark these days, extremely popular and it is not easy to get a table unless you book well in advance.

To fully experience the Viennese boiled beef experience, I opted for a few types of cuts. First was the salted tongue, super tender and lean, worked in perfect harmony together with the well-blended chive sauce. The infamous tafelspitz, much to my surprise, was really tender. It was juicy and really flavorsome thanks to the black pepper, carrots, and onions while it was cooking in the stock. Even better was the shoulder, it was so rich with a great ratio of marble, it had that beautiful melting sensation. On a side note, the bone marrow that came with the boiled beef was just heavenly when served with toast, melting buttery taste with a meaty richness. I got nothing but love for it.

I got to admit, on paper, boiled beef sounds pretty boring, as I always enjoy my beef in steak style and cooked medium rare. But Plachutta has really changed my view. Never before I had experience beef cooked in such style and yet it was so enjoyable. It was far from refine or anything to the fine dining level, but it was tasty and comforting with a lovely theater touch to it. The service was also very friendly and spoke good English, Plachutta is well worth a visit if you are a beef lover, just make sure book ahead!
