Chez Gaston, Bangsar

Robust French bistro fare reigns at Bretagne-born chef Florian Nigen's bright and welcoming new space in Bangsar.

Chef Nigen formerly co-founded Rendez-Vous, another casual French restaurant in this neighbourhood, so fans of Gallic cooking in KL should already be familiar with his food. If not, start with the wild boar pate (RM18) and the duck liver terrine (RM42) for a full-bodied introduction.

The kitchen stretches beyond the typical and the conservative in KL to showcase specialities like rabbit drenched in a whole-grain mustard sauce (RM59) and chunky house-made boudin noir - pork blood sausage that's a taste worth acquiring (RM35).

Beef enthusiasts, take note: Grass-fed French Charolais beef is available, packing plenty of flavour (RM42 per 100 grams; our portion shows 300 grams), as well as the timeless classic of beef bourguignon, prepared here with beef cheeks slow-cooked for eight hours (RM48). Satisfyingly rustic stuff, prudently paired with a Bordeaux (RM169 for a bottle of the Beau de France).
