"Golden Valley does really good chilli crabs."

Did I hear "chilli crabs"? That was enough to pique my interest. So, during the Raya school break, we headed over to Golden Valley for lunch with the kids. Located in LGB Tower in TTDI, this unpretentious restaurant serves affordable Chinese cuisine made with Halal ingredients - which means everyone can enjoy the food here!

Their a la carte menu consists of starters, soups, yam basket, claypot dishes, crabs, fish (patin buah, Murray perch, seabass, fish fillet), prawns, squid, chicken, beef, tofu, vegetables fried rice and noodles - yup, the menu is pretty comprehensive and just about covers everything we love about Chinese food :) They also do bento lunches, with prices starting from RM13+.

First to arrive was the Black Pepper Beef in Hotplate (RM16 for small). I ordered this as I reckoned Baby D would like this, and indeed he did! In fact, I think he ate almost 3/4 of the whole plate of beef. Hot and peppery, the beef slices were nice and tender... the boy kept asking for "more please!"

We are huge fans of salted egg yolk squid and if this dish appears on the menu, we have to order it. This time, we went for the medium portion (RM32) as it's always the fastest disappearing dish. The squid arrived in its golden glory, beautifully crisp and absolutely moreish. They also do salted egg yolk prawns, crabs or pumpkin so you can definitely go crazy and have them all if you like!

At Golden Valley, they offer four types of prawns - fresh water prawn, tiger prawns, shelled prawns or shelled mantis prawns. When dining with kids, we always find it easier to go for shelled prawns - we chose the butter cream sauce (RM16 for small). The prawns turned out to be quite large, with a lovely taut texture. The sauce was pretty nice, creamy with a hint of spiciness from the cili padi.

The kids were pretty well-fed by now, so it's time for mummy to enjoy some of her favorite dishes, starting with the Cantonese style fresh water prawn noodles (RM60) aka sang har meen. The portion will feed 2 nicely, with half a fresh water prawn each. The prawn was a reasonable size for the price they were charging, and most importantly fresh and meaty. Topped on crispy egg noodles and a thick, delicious egg gravy.

The piece de resistance of the meal was undoubtedly the chilli crab (RM15 per 100g). Two of these mud crabs was roughly around 1kg in weight. We chose the signature chilli sauce and it was soooooooo good! The crab was really fresh and the flesh was sweet and firm.

The sauce was sweet and spicy, and  we mopped almost all of it up with some deep fried mantao (RM6 for 6 pieces). The kids also had a meaty claw each and enjoyed it thoroughly. No wonder it's one of the bestselling dishes here at Golden Valley! I like how the staff is so attentive here too, changing our plates regularly once they got too full with crab shells as well as the finger bowl for cleaning our fingers in. That's what I call great service :)

For dessert, we shared the Lotus seed paste pancake (RM10), Red bean soup tong yuen (RM8) and the Longan and sea coconut (RM6). We left the restaurant with happy tummies and big smiles.
