Slick and edgy gastropub
Whole Stuffed Rotisserie Quail with Black Pudding and Moilee Sauce |
Tom Kerridge is the chef of the moment right now, gaining mainstream success with TV appearances and book launches, he is well on the way to becoming one of the biggest chef names in the UK. His flagship restaurant, The Hands and Flowers in Marlow is a 2 Michelin starred pub, the only pub in the UK with such acclaim. I drove pass Marlow but without the time to sit down for a proper sit-down meal, so his other gastro pub The Coach, just down the road was a perfect solution for me. The Coach is a Michelin starred pub with limited tables and a long counter sitting area facing the kitchen, serving pub classics with a modern edge in small plates format, diners are encouraged to order 3 - 4 dishes per person.
Mussels Marinière with Warm Stout |
Potted Crab with Cucumber Chutney and Smoked Paprika Butter |
Line Caught Cornish Cod with Roasted Cauliflower |
Crispy Pig’s Head with Celeriac Rémoulade |
The mussels marinière, cooked with warm stout was a beautiful start, the mussels were so clean but meaty at the same time, with the marinière was not overly creamy with a lovely bitter undertone. The Cornish cod with roasted cauliflower was seasoned to perfection, cut like flake with wonderful savory flavours bursting out from the fish. I was a big fan of the stuffed rotisserie quail, the meat was so tender and matched so well with the earthiness of the black pudding. I got to give a special shout-out to the chips, it was some of the biggest chips I have ever laid my hands on. The edge had such a lovely crispiness and crunchiness, with pillow-soft texture within, it was chips at the highest order.
Honey glazed bacon, fried egg, chanterelles |
Chicken Kiev with Carrot and Parsley |
The "super" chips |
The cooking at The Coach was outstanding, it was British food done properly with a touch of creativity, I would more than happy to return to try out other dishes. I am also a big fan of the decor, sitting at the bar with a full view of the kitchen, watching the chefs cooking and plating in front of you was a joy in itself. The service was smooth, nothing over the top, which was perfect for a pub setting. Be aware it is a pub with no booking policy, so best to come early or at less busy days such as on a Monday.
