The best meal we had during our Ipoh trip was at this restaurant in Bercham, called Different Taste. Their specialty dish is Claypot crab with glass noodles (tang hoon)... if you google this dish, you will find a few restaurants in Bercham serving this - Different Taste, Same Taste and Rasa Lain. However, a friend who is a local from Bercham recommended that we go to Different Taste.
We arrive slightly after 1.30pm, to avoid the lunch crowd. We ordered their signature crab dish, as well as la la and fishballs for the kids.
First to arrive was the lala clams (RM20). They only offer one cooking style here - steamed lala with a spicy sauce. Certainly no qualms in recommending this to anyone - the clams were fresh, meaty and juicy, and the sauce was so good and mildly spicy. Lala is Baby D's favorite seafood and he kept going back for more even though he found it slightly spicy - he went back and forth between the lala plate and his water bottle (to extinguish the "fire" in his mouth - so cute) :P
For the fishballs, you may specify how many you want - we ordered six (RM8.40). Topped with some minced fried garlic, the fish balls were huge and we enjoyed the bouncy texture.
The star of the afternoon was the claypot crab with glass noodles. We ordered one crab so the price came up to (RM60), which is pretty reasonable I feel. The crab was fresh, meaty and sweet and was cracked in all the right places, so we could get all the meat out easily. Of course, the best part is the claw! Love the broth too, which has slices of pork belly and black pepper that gives it a tinge of heat - really really flavorful and sweet. The tang hoon / glass noodles has absorbed the yummy broth too, so it was really delicious to eat. Extremely satisfying meal, we'd definitely come back here again next time we're in Ipoh.
